The Space Between Us

There are people you love, and then there are people who somehow become woven into you.

He was the latter.

His soul touched mine long before our bodies ever did, and maybe that’s why losing the physical closeness hasn’t made the connection disappear.

I still feel him in the quiet spaces of my life.

In songs.

In memories.

In the instinct to reach for my phone when something happens because for so long, he was the person I wanted to tell.

But what happened between us was more than love.

He changed me.

He reached parts of me I had spent most of my life protecting.

Parts I had buried so deeply I almost forgot they were there.

For most of my life, I knew how to survive.

How to carry things.

How to keep going.

How to hold myself together.

How to build walls before anyone ever got close enough to touch those parts of me.

And then he came along and somehow those walls didn’t feel necessary anymore.

He made me feel safe enough to become someone I had never really been allowed to be.

Soft.

Open.

Vulnerable.

Wanted.

He awakened a woman inside of me I didn’t even know existed.

A woman who could let herself be held instead of always being the one holding everything together.

A woman who could surrender.

A woman who could love without constantly waiting for the ground beneath her to disappear.

I didn’t just fall in love with him.

I came alive beside him.

When we first met, the connection was almost unsettling because of how familiar it felt.

It wasn’t like meeting someone new.

It was recognition.

Like some part of me looked at some part of him and whispered,

There you are.

Like we had known each other before.

Maybe in another life.

Maybe in another version of us.

Maybe somewhere I’ll never be able to explain.

But I knew him.

And somehow, he knew me too.

The connection was raw and immediate.

He felt like the piece of my soul I had spent my whole life unknowingly searching for.

And we both felt it.

For months we tried to deny it.

Tried to stay behind the lines we had drawn.

Tried to convince ourselves that whatever was happening between us could be contained.

But some connections grow too large for the boundaries you place around them.

And when we finally stopped fighting it, our worlds didn’t just collide.

Mine cracked open.

Our bodies found each other, but that was only one part of it.

What happened between us reached far beyond the physical.

Emotionally.

Spiritually.

In ways that changed the way I understood closeness itself.

His love ignited something in me.

Not just desire, but a hunger for a fuller kind of life.

For intimacy.

For tenderness.

For honesty.

For mornings beside someone I loved.

For the ordinary little moments that suddenly felt sacred because they were ours.

For a life that felt more alive than anything I had known before.

He made me want more.

More life.

More softness.

More connection.

More of the version of myself I had only just begun to meet.

He made me understand how deeply I was capable of loving someone.

And maybe even more terrifyingly, he showed me how deeply I wanted to be loved.

Once someone has touched the part of you that spent years starving for tenderness, you cannot unknow that hunger.

Once your soul has felt recognized, ordinary connection starts to feel different.

That is the part no one warns you about.

They tell you love can change you.

They don’t tell you what happens when the person who changed you is suddenly no longer beside you.

Because losing him wasn’t just losing the man I loved.

It felt like losing access to the version of myself that existed with him.

The softer version.

The woman who laughed easier.

Who slept deeper.

Who wasn’t always bracing herself.

Who believed she had finally found the place where she could put down everything she had been carrying.

God, I miss him.

But I miss her too.

I miss who I was when I was loved by him.

For the first time in my life, I understood what people meant when they talked about the invisible string.

Because nothing about us felt accidental.

It felt like every road, every heartbreak, every wrong turn, every year of our lives had somehow been quietly pulling us toward one another.

And when we finally found each other, my soul knew.

The noise was finally quiet.

For once, my heart wasn’t searching.

I wasn’t wondering if there was something more.

I wasn’t trying to convince myself to feel something that wasn’t there.

I just knew.

It’s you.

I had found my person.

For the first time, everything inside me felt still.

I was home.

Not in a place.

In him.

And how do you move on from that?

How do you tell your heart to release the person it finally felt safe enough to belong to?

How do you convince your soul that what it recognized as home is somewhere it can no longer live?

My head understands all the reasons we are here.

My heart doesn’t care about any of them.

It still reaches for him.

And somewhere deeper than thought, my soul still reaches for him too.

They remember what it felt like to be close to him, to be safe with him, to belong there.

And no amount of logic seems to know how to make them forget.

Sometimes I swear my body remembers him before my mind does.

The feeling of being pulled into him.

The safety of his arms.

The closeness.

The warmth.

The feeling that for a little while, I didn’t have to be strong.

And the craving isn’t only for touch.

It is for his touch.

His presence.

His energy.

The way everything inside me seemed to settle when he was near.

There is a specific kind of grief in having once known exactly where you wanted to be and suddenly having no way to get back there.

I used to think heartbreak was about learning how to stop loving someone.

I’m beginning to understand that sometimes it’s learning how to keep living while you still do.

And maybe the hardest part of loving you now is learning how to exist in the space between us.

Close enough to still feel you, but too far away to reach for you.

People say time heals all wounds.

But lately, time feels more like a thief.

It keeps moving forward whether I am ready or not.

It carries me farther away from the last time I touched him.

Farther from the last time I woke beside him.

Farther from ordinary moments I didn’t know would someday become the ones I would replay just to feel close to him again.

And somehow, time hasn’t made me miss him less.

It has only shown me how deeply the missing can settle into a person.

I still yearn for him.

I still crave him.

I still love him in places I don’t know how to reach inside myself, let alone how to turn off.

Losing something this intertwined doesn’t feel like heartbreak.

Heartbreak makes it sound survivable in some neat, ordinary way.

This feels like being ripped apart from the inside out.

Like someone found a single loose thread and pulled, only to discover he had been woven through every part of me.

My heart. My body. My memories. My sense of home.

And now everything he touched feels torn open.

There aren’t just holes.

There are entire pieces of me missing.

Some days I think they are closing.

Then a song plays.

A memory hits.

I instinctively reach for my phone.

And suddenly I am bleeding through all of them again.

Maybe I will heal.

I hope I will.

But I don’t think healing will ever mean becoming the woman I was before him.

Because she doesn’t exist anymore.

He changed her.

He opened her.

He woke her up.

And maybe somewhere inside all of this grief is something I’m not ready to understand yet:

Maybe the parts of me he awakened are still here. I just don’t know how to reach them without him yet.

The softness. The vulnerability. The hunger for connection. The depth of love. The woman I became beside him.

I don’t know what to do with her now.

Because he didn’t just meet that version of me.

He helped bring her to life.

And part of what hurts so much is that she still reaches for the person who made her feel safe enough to exist.
