I Don’t Want to Become Less

I almost talked myself out of being kind today.

Not because I didn’t mean it.

Not because someone didn’t deserve it.

But because somewhere along the way, I started believing that showing people I care might make me too much.

And I sat there wondering when the hell that happened to me.

When did telling someone I care become something I have to think through, weigh out, and possibly talk myself out of?

When did being myself become something I needed to be careful about?

I hate it.

I hate that something as simple as caring about another human being has become something I feel like I need to calculate.

Don’t reach out first. Don’t be too available. Don’t give too much. Let people miss you. Match their energy.

But sometimes I wonder if we’ve become so afraid of being hurt that we’ve started treating kindness like a weakness.

Like showing someone you care somehow gives them the upper hand.

Like the person who feels less wins.

And I don’t want to live like that.

I don’t want to become cold just because being warm has cost me.

Because I know what it’s like to carry heavy things alone.

To show up. Go to work. Smile. Take care of what needs to be done. Hold everything together.

And then go home with so much sitting on your chest that you don’t even know where to begin.

I’ve been that woman.

The one who wished someone would notice she wasn’t okay without making her explain why.

Not because she needed rescuing.

But because sometimes you just want someone to sit beside you and remind you that you don’t have to be strong every damn minute.

I know that loneliness.

And maybe that’s why, when I recognize someone else struggling, my first instinct is to reach for them.

To tell them I’m here.

That they don’t have to explain everything.

That they don’t have to carry it all alone.

Not because I think I can fix them.

But because I remember what it felt like to wish someone would say those words to me.

And yet, here I am, questioning whether I should offer someone the very kindness I once wished someone had offered me.

And that makes me angry.

Because when the hell did caring about someone become something I needed to second-guess?

But here’s the uncomfortable truth.

Sometimes my kindness has come from a genuine place of wanting someone to feel less alone.

And sometimes it’s come from fear.

Fear that if I stopped reaching out, the connection would disappear.

Fear that if I wasn’t the one keeping a conversation alive, there wouldn’t be another one.

Fear that something meaningful to me might not mean nearly as much to someone else.

And admitting that isn’t easy.

Because I want to believe everything I give comes from the purest place in my heart.

But I’m human.

Sometimes I care without expecting anything.

Sometimes I care and quietly hope someone cares enough to meet me there.

And sometimes I don’t know the difference until I’ve already given more of myself than I intended.

So now I’m trying to be more intentional.

To recognize when I’m reaching out because I genuinely want to and when I’m reaching out because silence makes me uncomfortable.

To understand that I can care about someone without needing to know exactly where I stand in their life.

But nobody tells you how exhausting that can become.

To type something kind and then delete it.

To have a genuine thought and immediately start analyzing how it might be received.

And suddenly, something that should have been simple becomes another conversation you’re having with yourself.

Am I protecting myself?

Or am I just scared?

I’m tired of it.

I’m tired of feeling like every interaction needs to be measured.

Like caring needs to be earned before it can be expressed.

Like vulnerability is something I should ration out carefully so nobody gets more of me than they’ve proven they deserve.

I don’t want to pretend I feel less than I do.

I don’t want to withhold kindness just to see if someone notices it’s missing.

And I don’t want to turn every connection into some quiet test of who cares more.

But I also know that not every instinct needs to become an action.

That sometimes I can feel something deeply and let it sit.

That I don’t have to fill every silence.

That I can offer someone kindness without making myself responsible for what happens afterward.

And maybe that’s the part I’m struggling with most.

Not learning how to care less.

Learning that I can care just as much without always needing to do something about it.

I wish that came naturally.

I wish I could say I know exactly where the line is.

Between being compassionate and overextending myself.

Between respecting someone’s space and holding back out of fear.

Between being intentional and becoming so guarded that I barely recognize myself.

But I don’t.

Because I still want to be the woman who asks the deeper questions.

Who remembers the little things.

Who cares when someone is hurting.

Who isn’t afraid of uncomfortable conversations or meaningful connections.

Who can tell someone they matter without needing a guarantee that they feel the same.

I don’t want those things to become casualties of everything I’ve been through.

And I wonder how many times I’ve already talked myself out of being the person I actually am.

How many kind words I’ve swallowed.

How many times I’ve mistaken holding back for healing.

How many times I’ve convinced myself I was being strong when I was really just afraid.

And I wonder when protecting myself became so important that I started needing protection from my own heart.

I don’t know where the line is yet.

Between caring and giving too much.

Between protecting myself and shutting myself down.

Between growing and becoming someone I never wanted to be.

But I know one thing.

I don’t want to become less.
